When designing your pond you first need to look at the surface area in relation to how many bottom drains will be needed. The total pond volume then needs to be worked out and divided by how many drains. This figure then needs to divided by 2.5 which is the recommended pond turnover. This will give you an idea of the filter required and the water pump needed to run it.

For example, if the pond is to measure 6m x 3m then 2 bottom drains are need to effectively keep the base of the pond clean. The depth of the pond will be 2m so total pond volume is 6x3x2 = 36m3 or 36,000 litres or 7920 gallons. 7920 divided by 2 = 3960 gallons then this number divide by 2.5 hours = 1584 gallons. Therefore the filtration needed has to cope with a turnover of 1584 gallons per hour and the water pump to be used should move this amount of water taking into account the restrictions put in place (pipework and fittings, heater, uv, waterfall etc).

If you intend to run a skimmer on your pond then the water pump needed for this depends on the restrictions you have on the return line. In most instances the same size pump you use for the filter is also good for running the skimmer. It also seves as a good backup pump if the filter pump breaks down. Most water pumps will require a pump/ leaf basket in between the skimmer and the pump to protect the pump from heavy debris.
